Alma's own words are that the treatment is fast with some mild discomfort, that a numbing cream can be applied, and that it can take as little as ten minutes. The wait before intercourse is three days, or for as long as Dr Marie Duggan advises, so that the tissue has settled. Every treatment is given by Dr Marie Duggan, GMC 7488383, at Femilift Clinic London, 130 Harley Street, London, W1G 7JU, after a free consultation and examination.
During the session
A probe with a single-use sleeve is placed in the vagina and the laser is pulsed in a 360-degree motion throughout the vaginal canal, repeated to cover the area. A numbing cream can be applied beforehand, as Alma describes. In our practice the energy is set by the doctor.
After the session
Alma describes minimal downtime. In the 59-woman FemiLift series some women had discharge, swelling or itching, none lasting over five days. No intercourse or swimming for three days, or for as long as Dr Marie Duggan advises, and in our practice pelvic floor training continues as before. Contact us about bleeding, pain that increases, a discharge that smells or persists beyond five days, or pain on intercourse that continues.
The harms to know
The FDA's 2018 communication named vaginal burns, scarring, pain during sexual intercourse, and recurring or chronic pain. A 2019 report described four women referred with complications after a course of three laser treatments for menopausal symptoms: one had vaginal wall lacerations after resuming intercourse, and three had persistent or worsening pain on intercourse. A 2019 review of the FDA's database found 45 reports covering 46 patients between 2015 and 2019 for all energy devices sold for this purpose, pain reported in 19 and 33 describing a chronic injury. The examination, a doctor setting the energy and the wait before intercourse are the safeguards. The full guide covers the rest.
