FAQ

FemiLift questions answered

These are the questions women ask about FemiLift, grouped the way they are asked, with each trial result given on both sides. The price comes first because it is the question asked most; the figure is given in writing at the free consultation. Every treatment is given by Dr Marie Duggan, GMC 7488383. Price and sessions

How much does FemiLift cost in London?

We set out the price of FemiLift in writing at a free consultation, and we price match any comparable written quote. Consultations and follow-up reviews are free whatever you decide. The price depends on the number of sessions.

How is FemiLift done?

After an examination, a probe with a single-use sleeve is placed in the vagina and the fractional CO2 laser is delivered to the wall in a pattern of 81 pixels in a 360-degree motion throughout the vaginal canal. Alma describes it as fast, as little as ten minutes, with some mild discomfort, and a numbing cream can be applied. The how it works page has the detail.

Is it painful, and how long until sex?

Alma describes some mild discomfort, and a numbing cream can be applied. No intercourse for three days, or for as long as Dr Marie Duggan advises. In the 59-woman FemiLift series some women had discharge, swelling or itching, none lasting over five days.

Results

Is FemiLift worth it?

That depends on your symptom and on the evidence for it, which this site gives on both sides. Two of six sham-controlled trials found a gain for symptoms after the menopause, one of four for stress incontinence, and the laxity studies are uncontrolled. Dr Marie Duggan examines you and tells you at the free consultation what that means for you, with the first-line options NICE names discussed alongside.

Does FemiLift make you tighter?

The laser studies for tightening have no sham group. A 2024 review reported that sexual function improved in observational studies but not in randomised trials. In a 176-woman series all its sexual function and symptom scores improved after the first course, and a third needed more laser within two years.

How long does FemiLift last?

In the 59-woman FemiLift series the best results came between three and six months, leakage had partly returned by twelve months, and the authors suggest maintenance at six to twelve months. In the 176-woman series 33.5% had more laser within two years. In the trial with the longest follow-up, continence lasted 26.7 months on average after the laser against 8.21 after sham.

Does it work, or are the reviews mixed?

The trials are mixed: for symptoms after the menopause, two sham-controlled trials found a gain and four did not; for stress incontinence, one found a gain and three did not. The consultation gives you the results for your symptom rather than a verdict.

What do patients say, and are there before and after photographs?

Our patients review the clinic on review.clinic, where it scores 4.9 out of 5 from 51 reviews in November 2026. We quote no review here, we show no before-and-after photographs for FemiLift, and the trials are the evidence we rely on.

The conditions

What helps vaginal laxity?

Pelvic floor training is the first-line treatment NICE names for stress incontinence, and the laser studies for laxity have no sham group. Dr Marie Duggan examines you and discusses both, and in our practice refers you where a prolapse or another cause needs a diagnosis first. The laxity page explains.

Laser or pelvic floor physiotherapy?

NICE names supervised pelvic floor training as the first-line treatment for stress incontinence, and in our practice it continues whatever you decide about the laser. In a 2026 trial of 94 women the laser was non-inferior to pelvic floor training at twelve months.

Can it help after childbirth or a hysterectomy?

After childbirth there is one uncontrolled series of 30 breastfeeding women, on another maker's laser, and no randomised trial. After a hysterectomy the doctor examines you and discusses what is and is not known at the consultation.

Does it help dryness after the menopause, and can it replace vaginal oestrogen?

Two sham-controlled trials found a gain for symptoms after the menopause and four did not, and the biopsy study found no tissue difference. NICE's menopause guideline says to offer vaginal oestrogen, and its committee was told the laser may have a role for women unable to use topical oestrogen. The menopause page explains.

FemiLift, radiofrequency or another vaginal laser?

The FDA's 2018 statement covers energy-based devices, "commonly radiofrequency or laser". The 2022 trial of 114 women with stress incontinence compared the two: both did significantly better than sham, with similar results. The trials do not compare laser brands, and the doctor explains the difference at the consultation.

Safety

Does it cause scar tissue, and how safe is it?

In the 59-woman series some women had discharge, swelling or itching, none lasting over five days. The FDA named burns, scarring and chronic pain among the risks. A 2019 report described four women with pain on intercourse after a course of three laser treatments, one with vaginal wall lacerations, and 45 reports for all such devices reached the FDA between 2015 and 2019. The examination, a doctor setting the energy and the wait before intercourse are the safeguards.

How does a laser change vaginal tissue?

NICE describes the claimed effect as promoting tissue remodelling and the production of new collagen. A sham-controlled biopsy study of 49 women from the 2021 trial found no tissue difference between laser and sham.
